There are songwriters who paint pictures and describe emotions that affect us in great ways and we never know their names. If you’ve listened to Peter, Paul and Mary, Nanci Griffith, Mason Williams, Glen Yarborough, or Jerry Jeff Walker, you may very well have heard and been affected by a song written by Bill Staines, a prolific songwriter and gifted singer and guitarist. Since he has traveled back and forth across North America for more than forty years and has had many appearances on Prairie Home Companion, you could easily have seen him, but if not, you will have a chance on May 28 at the Outpost Performance Space. And whether you have seen him before or not, you will be in for a great evening. With his warm voice and the occasional yodel, he sings pictures of the people and places of his travels, of the America that lives in our memories and in our dreams and hopes. Nanci Griffith said, “Bill Staines has been my hero since 1977. He carries on where Woody left off – carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew.”
His new collection of songs is called Old Dogs, and it’s a mix of original songs and covers. One reviewer said, “The theme of Old Dogs, like its title song, is a meditation on growing older and simply noticing the clear-eyed wonder of places and time slowly passing away. Staines invites us to join him on a journey through the back roads of Wyoming, to see the antique-ambiance of a fading, aging Savannah, and to gaze in to the madness of a Montana man’s ‘forgotten son of some old yesterday.’ The images pass by like old photographs from an antique trunk locked away for years.” You may not have been to the same places or seen the same people, but you will feel as though you had, the pictures are so clear and real.
